Microwave Wave Guard Cover: When and Why to Replace It

🛡️ Microwave Wave Guard Cover: When and Why to Replace It

The wave guard cover (also known as a waveguide cover) is a small yet vital component in your microwave.

1. The Cover's Function

The cover's main purpose is to shield the opening through which the microwaves, generated by the internal Magnetron, enter the cooking cavity.

  • It acts as a barrier, preventing food particles, fat, and moisture from getting into the internal workings of the microwave.

2. When to Replace the Cover

Over time, fat and food splatters can be absorbed by the cover, causing it to deteriorate. A damaged cover can lead to sparking and improper operation.

You must replace the wave guard cover immediately if you observe any of these signs:

  • Physical Damage: The cover has fallen off, has a hole, or has become soft/overly-flexible.
  • Heat Damage: There are any visible signs of burning or overheating on or around the cover?
  • Sparking: You see sparking or arcing occurring in the microwave cavity during use.

Consequence: A faulty or damaged cover can also cause your microwave to cook your food unevenly.

3. ⚠️ Safety Note on Installation

In the interest of consumer safety, wave guard covers should only be fitted by a suitably qualified person. The machine must be completely disconnected from the mains power supply before any maintenance is attempted.
